Comparing Archangel and Loomis NRX
I've been using the Loomis NRX since they came out and GLX prior to that for the past 15+ years and after some research decided to try this rod. I purchased the 6'11" / medium / fast tip & the 7'2" / med hvy / ext fast tips. Comparing them against Loomis NRX I think the Archangel is: sensitivity, both NRX and Archangel you can feel everything; action, medium - the Archangel has more flex than the NRX medium action, med-hvy - again the NRX is the stiffer of the two; tip - I think the Archangel's tips are more like the old Heddon classifications in this area than the Loomis (I try to compare to what I learned as a boy - my Dad used Heddon rods and had both fast and ext fast tips). Both are pricey rods. I was a little surprised the Archangel did not come with a hook saver; I have gotten used to using hook savers over the past 15+ and it was awkward to store the bait on an eye. Pros and cons: Archangel is more attractive than the NRX; NRX is stiffer in both the med and med-hvy than the Archangel; I liked the tips on the Archangel more than the NRX; both handle bass well; since I have been using Loomis rods exclusively over the past 15+ years the shorter handle length behind the reel seat was noticed from the very first cast. . . jury is out on this one - toss up as to which is the better rod - they are both great rods!!!! For bass I think the 6'11" med action Archangel will be better for crank baits than the NRX. For spinner baits I think the 6"8" med-hvy NRX is hard to beat. For soft plastics I think in cover both med-hvy have ample backbone for good hook sets and to fight the fish away from & out of vegetation and wood. Both the Archangel and NRX med-hvy seem to be good for frogs and buzz baits. I haven't tried the hvy in the Archangel so I do not know how it works with flipping. I do think the Archangel will handle speckled trout better than the NRX because it loads softer and both the med/hvy actions will work great for red fish. For the price the Archangel doesn't seem to have a warranty (no mention in the literature) which Loomis does have a good warranty so the NRX has a hand up in that area. I'm not exactly sure what the material part of the handle of the Archangel is made from and want to see how it holds up in the fishing environments I go in and out of (fresh, brackish, and salt). As I mentioned before - they are both good rods so far (use of Archangel - Toledo Bend for one weekend: used spinner baits, frogs, buzz baits, lizzards, baby brush hogs, flukes, and several crank baits - square billed and 6' to 8' baits). I caught bass on all the different baits except the crank baits and found both Archangels to have ample backbone to handle bass up to 7 pounds. Seems to be a great rod just as it the Loomis NRX.
