- Excellent reel that fills a void in the industry
At 16 oz., it fills the industry niche between the 4000 or 5000 series reels that weigh 11-14 oz. designed for inshore less powerful fish, and the 6000-8000 series that weigh 19-21 oz. and don't balance well with lighter tackle.
The drag is precise, smooth, and powerful. In my experience, it is better than Stradics and Sustains over a wide range of drag settings. The gear ratio is fast without sacrificing cranking power, and it holds an adequate amount of braid. The propulsion spool lip seems a little rounder than my Stradic 5000fj, enhancing casting distance while virtually eliminating wind knots (just don't overfill the spool).
It casts and handles with smooth precision. I have used it primarily on 8' medium heavy rods, and it works great on king mackerel, false albacore, and bull redfish. It's a medium weight reel with heavyweight power and lightweight refinements.
In my opinion, this is the best spinning reel for the money Shimano has ever made.
